Building teachers’ mastery of assessing students’ skill performance, proficiency, and creative thinking is essential. Skills are the foundation for learning in life. Working in Urban Ed to support learners in city schools has real challenges. Passion for improving the education provided in urban schools can be the foundation for building a strong learning community. Covid has highlighted existing long-term systemic issues in the education of urban and underserved populations. Enabling educators to fulfill a commitment to support and empower individual learners is essential.

An active learner can make progress on their mastery of a targeted skill, and on relevant essential skills that are part of the process. Goals set in districts, and schools must directly impact principals’ and teachers’ work with students and colleagues creating a community collaborating across lines of difference and creating inclusive learning environments where all students can learn. Commitment to well-defined goals is critical. Enabling groups to lean into the challenge is essential for real change. Progress requires challenges being owned and resolved.

Having 25 years of experience provides insight. It can be challenging and yet facilitating success on critical goals is truly rewarding. Building mastery of skills in schools requires learning to be a lifelong journey. Teachers, students, principals, and district leaders must own their role. Covid has brought some challenges to light. The necessary change is challenging and essential.
